How to remove a password or restrictions from your own PDF

You may want to remove a password you no longer need, or a “no printing, no copying” restriction on a document that is yours. Unlock PDF does that in your browser.

Only for files you may modify

Use it for documents you own or have permission to change. It is not a way into someone else’s protected document.

Steps

  1. Add the protected PDF.
  2. Enter the PDF password if the file asks for one to open.
  3. Choose Output quality: 150, 200 (balanced) or 300 dpi.
  4. Download the unlocked file.

What actually happens

The tool opens the file, renders each page and builds a new PDF from those page images. The new file has no password or restrictions. The trade-off, which the tool also warns about, is that text becomes non-selectable, because the pages are now pictures.

Tips

  • Choose 200 dpi for a balanced file. Use 300 if small print must stay crisp, 150 if size matters.
  • If you need the text, run PDF to text on the original with its password instead.
  • File size can grow because pages are images; use Compress PDF if needed.

When it will not work

If a PDF needs a password to open and you do not know it, it cannot be opened. There is no recovery or guessing feature.
