How to edit or remove PDF metadata (title, author, keywords)
Every PDF can carry hidden details: who wrote it, which program made it, a title that appears in the browser tab. Edit PDF metadata sets, replaces or wipes those fields.
Steps
- Add your PDF.
- Fill in Title, Author, Subject, Keywords or Creator application. A field you leave empty keeps what is already in the file. Or tick Clear all existing metadata first to wipe everything.
- Download the updated PDF.
Why it matters
- Title: many viewers show this in the tab or window instead of the file name, so a clear title looks professional and helps search.
- Author and creator: may reveal a person’s name or the software used. Clear them before publishing if you prefer not to share.
- Keywords and subject: help your own document search tools.
Tips
- Set a meaningful title for every PDF you publish on a website.
- For anonymous sharing, tick Clear all and leave the fields empty.
- Metadata is separate from page content. It does not remove names that appear on the pages themselves.
Limits
Some programs keep extra data (such as XMP metadata streams or file history) that simple editing may not touch. For highly sensitive sharing, recreate the file by exporting a fresh copy from the source application.
