How to convert between JPG, PNG and WebP images

Websites want WebP, forms want JPG, designers send PNG. Convert image switches formats in bulk, locally.

Steps

  1. Add your images.
  2. Choose Convert to: PNG, JPG or WebP.
  3. Set Quality (default 92%) for JPG and WebP.
  4. Pick the colour used to fill transparent areas (white by default).
  5. Download the converted files.

The transparency issue

PNG and WebP can be see-through; JPG cannot. Converting to JPG replaces transparent areas with the fill colour. White suits most documents; choose another colour if the picture will sit on a coloured page.

Which format?

  • JPG for photos and maximum compatibility.
  • PNG for graphics, text and anything that must stay pixel-perfect.
  • WebP for smaller web images.

The details are in the format comparison.

Tips

  • Converting JPG to PNG does not restore lost quality; the file just gets bigger.
  • Converting JPG to JPG repeatedly degrades the picture; convert once from the original.
  • After converting, compress if you need a smaller file.

Limits

Some formats such as HEIC from iPhones depend on your browser’s support. If a file does not open, try a different browser or export it as JPG from the Photos app.
